Dlaczego?
Nasza kolekcja to ponad 3500 prac wykonanych w różnych technikach. Zachęta
jest spadkobierczynią Towarzystwa
Zachęty Sztuk Pięknych (TZSP), jak i Centralnego Biura Wystaw Artystycznych (CBWA), a historia jej zbiorów
ilustruje ciekawe dzieje instytucji. Kolekcja zmieniała się, ewoluowała,
dzięki temu jest niezwykle różnorodna.
Znajdują się w niej prace klasyków sztuki XX w. m.in.: Tadeusza Kantora, Edwarda
Krasińskiego, Erny Rosenstein, Henryka
Stażewskiego, Aliny
Szapocznikow, a
także światowej sławy współczesnych artystów polskich: Mirosława Bałki, Katarzyny
Kozyry, Zbigniewa Libery, Wilhelma Sasnala oraz wielu innych artystów. Od czasu, kiedy Zachęta
stała się samodzielną galerią sztuki współczesnej, kontynuujemy ponad
100-letnią tradycję tworzenia kolekcji i budujemy zbiory w oparciu o nasz
program wystaw.
5. Dla kogo?
Jesteśmy galerią, więc pokazujemy tylko wystawy czasowe i nie mamy stałej
ekspozycji prac z kolekcji. Ale nie kupujemy jej do magazynu! Wypożyczamy nasze prace na wystawy do wielu
instytucji w Polsce i za granicą (teraz są m.in. w Metropolitan Museum of Art w
Nowym Jorku). Staramy się systematycznie organizować wystawy z kolekcji i w
Zachęcie, i poza nią — pokazywaliśmy je nawet na lotnisku. Prace z kolekcji są
bardzo ważną częścią naszego programu edukacyjnego dla dzieci, młodzieży i
dorosłych oraz dla osób z niepełnosprawnością sensoryczną. Dzięki nim powstają
warsztaty, szkolenia, filmy i gry, którymi potem dzielimy się bez żadnych
ograniczeń i bezpłatnie.
6. Gdzie?
Przyjęliśmy zasadę, że to co kupujemy za publiczne pieniądze jest
publiczną własnością. Dlatego wszystkie prace udostępniamy na naszej stronie
internetowej, a większość reprodukcji oraz filmów z kolekcji jest na
licencjach Creative Commons. Dzięki temu użytkownicy mogą je pobierać i
swobodnie wykorzystywać.

Rzeźba Moniki Zawadzki została wyprodukowana specjalnie na wystawę artystki
w Zachęcie zatytułowaną Bydło
(2014). Zawadzki jest autorką prostych,
oszczędnych rzeźb, tworzy także obrazy i wideo. Jednym z głównych
tematów jej twórczości jest idea kreowania tożsamości, wyrażana za
pośrednictwem uniwersalnych kształtów.

Radziszewskiego odnosi się bezpośrednio do dzieła Edwarda Krasińskiego Instalacja za zbiorów Zachęty (Krasiński
odwołał się do przedwojennej historii galerii, w skład instalacji wchodzi 11
czarno-białych reprodukcji dzieł należących do pierwszej kolekcji Zachęty,
obecnie w Muzeum Narodowym w Warszawie, m.in. Bitwy pod Grunwaldem, przepasanych charakterystyczną niebieską
linią). Radziszewski strawestował dzieło klasyka polskiego konceptualizmu —
tworząc własną wersję autoportretu, zastosował swój wariant kolorowej taśmy.
Wojciech Gilewicz, Rockaway, 2015, wideo (HD), 17’43”, ed. 3 + 2 AP; fot. dzięki uprzejmości artysty
Rockaway to nazwa jednej z peryferyjnych dzielnic nowojorskiej metropolii,
w której mieszka matka artysty. Gilewicz towarzyszy jej z kamerą w trakcie
porządkowania domu częściowo zniszczonego przez huragan Sandy. Domu, w którym
artysta ma też swoją pracownię. Rockaway
ma charakter biograficzny i autotematyczny. Wpisuje się w kontekst prac
opowiadających o współczesnym życiu i twórczości artystów — w tym wypadku
niezależnego artysty działającego w Nowym Jorku.
Anna Jermolaewa, Aleksandra Wysokińska/20 Jahre danach, 2009, HD wideo, 41’, ed. 2/5

Film pokazany został na monograficznej wystawie artystki w Zachęcie w 2015
roku. Opowiada o niezwykłej postawie tytułowej bohaterki — Polki z Krakowa,
która poświęcając bardzo wiele, pomogła Jermolaewej przedostać się za żelazną kurtynę.
Artystka z powodów politycznych (była współzałożycielką pierwszej rosyjskiej
partii opozycyjnej) zmuszona była uciekać ze Związku Radzieckiego. Po latach
Jermolaewa postanowiła odnaleźć kobietę i w podzięce za udzielone jej
bezinteresowne wsparcie, sfilmować spotkanie z nią.

Adam Rzepecki (ur. w 1950 roku) jest fotografem, performerem i historykiem
sztuki, od 1979 członkiem słynnej grupy Łódź Kaliska, od 1990 grupy Stacja
Pi.Stacja. Wybór zdjęć podyktowany był ideą stworzenia serii prac, które łączą
się we wspólnej narracji. Zdjęcia są autobiograficzne, poruszają zagadnienia
tożsamości artysty oraz w charakterystyczny dla niego, niepozbawiony humoru
sposób odwołują się do historii sztuki i do zagadnień związanych z appropriation art. (sztuką
zawłaszczania). Jego fotografie zaprezentowane zostały na wystawie Kanibalizm? O zawłaszczeniach w sztuce
(Zachęta, 2015).

3. What for?
For the purchase of works by Adam Rzepecki, Monika Zawadzki, Wojciech Gilewicz,
Karol Radziszewski, and Anna Jermolaewa
4. Why?
Our collection comprises over 3,500 works made in different techniques. Zachęta
is the heir of the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts (TZSP) and the Central Artistic Exhibition Office (CBWA), and the stories about its collection
illustrate the compelling history of this institution. The collection has been
changing and evolving, becoming highly diverse. It includes works of classical
artists of the 20th century, e.g.: Tadeusz Kantor, Edward Krasiński, Erna Rosenstein, Henryk Stażewski, Alina Szapocznikow, as well as world-famous Polish contemporary artists: Mirosław Bałka, Katarzyna Kozyra, Zbigniew Libera, Wilhelm Sasnal, an many others. Since Zachęta became an independent
contemporary art gallery, it has continued its over a 100-year-old tradition of
building the collection. We compile our collections based on our exhibition
programme.

For whom?
We are a gallery, so we only show temporary exhibitions and have no permanent
exhibition of the works making up our collection. But we do not buy works of
art only to put them in a storage! We
lend our works to the exhibitions of many institutions in Poland and abroad
(e.g. some of them are currently in The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New
York). We try to organise systematically exhibitions of the works from our
collection both in Zachęta and outside — we have even staged some at an
airport. Our collection works are important part our educational programme for
children, teenagers, and adults, and for people with sensory impairment. They
are a basis for workshops, courses, films, and games which we then share
without any limitations and for free.
6.
Where?
We have established a principle that everything that we buy for public money is
public property. For this reason, all the collection works are available on our
Internet website, and most reproductions and films in the collection are
Creative Commons licensed. Thanks to this, users may download and use them
freely.

Monika Zawadzki, Autoportret (Self-portrait) 1, 2

Monika Zawadzki’s sculpture was made specially for the artist’s exhibition at
Zachęta, titled Bydło (Cattle) (2014). Zawadzki is an author of simple, austere
sculptures. She also creates paintings and videos. One of the main themes of
her works is the concept of identity creation, expressed by means of universal
shapes.
2. Karol Radziszewski,
Scotch pink, 2007/2015, photograph on MDF, 200 x 100 x 2 cm, unique

The work Scotch pink by Karol Radziszewski refers directly to the work
of Edward Krasiński’s Instalacja (Installation), which is part of the
Zachęta collection (Krasiński referred to the pre-war history of the gallery,
the installation consists of 11 black-and-white reproductions of works
comprising the first Zachęta collection, currently at the National Museum in
Warsaw, including e.g. Bitwa pod Grunwaldem (the Battle of Grunwald),
girded with a characteristic blue line). Radziszewski placed the work of the
classical artist of Polish conceptualism in a new context — creating his own
version of the self-portrait, he used his own variation of the coloured tape.

Wojciech Gilewicz, Rockaway, 2015, video (HD),

Rockaway is the name of one of the peripheral parts of
New York City, where the artist’s mother lives. Gilewicz accompanies her with a
video camera during the tidying of a house partly destroyed by Hurricane Sandy.
A house which also hosts the artist’s studio. Rockaway is biographical
and autothematic in nature. It fits into the context of works illustrating the
contemporary life and work of artists — in this case, an independent artist
working in New York.
4. Anna Jermolaewa, Aleksandra
Wysokińska/20 Jahre danach, 2009, HD video, 41’, ed. 2/5 + 2 e.a.
The video was shown at the artist’s monographic exhibition in Zachęta in 2015.
It is about the exceptional attitude of the title heroine — a Polish woman from
Cracow who sacrificed a good deal to help Jermolaewa get through the iron
curtain. The artist was made to escape from the Soviet Union for political
reasons (she was a co-founder of the first Russian opposition party). Years
after, Jermolaewa decided to find the woman and film the meeting as a way of
expressing her thanks for the support given without expecting anything in
return.

Adam Rzepecki, Badanie obiektywności fotografii (pokój) (Studying the

Adam Rzepecki (born in 1950) is a photographer, performer, and art historian;
he has been a member of the famous Łódź Kaliska group since 1979 and of the
Stacja Pi.Stacja group since 1990. The selection of the photographs was
dictated by the idea of creating a series of works that combine together in
shared narration. The photographs are autobiographical. They deal with the
theme of artist identity and refer to the history of art and issues related to
appropriation art in a manner characteristic of the author and not devoid
of humour. His photographs were presented at the exhibition Cannibalism? On
Appropriation in Art (Zachęta, 2015).
